Tyler LaHaie

Overview

I'm a service-oriented, results-driven design leader with 22 years of experience. I have built and led design departments with over 100 people.

If I had to pick one defining thing that sums up who I am as a leader, it’s that I care about people. I do my best to show up in people’s lives with kindness, candor, and personal attention. I believe we can achieve the best results when we have high standards and follow that up with caring personally.
I have had the honor to lead design for digital products and games that are beloved by hundreds of millions of people around the world and generate billions of dollars in revenue ranging from Fortnite to Amazon.com.

I am a former active duty US Marine, a former internationally acclaimed DJ/Producer of house music, and a 1st Dahn Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. I live in North Carolina with my husband Jack and our 2 golden retrievers.

My Bookshelf

I’m a lifelong, self-taught learner. I will slowly read a book, pull out quotes, write them on notecards, laminate them, and study them daily. It’s how I retain knowledge and get better. Somehow the physicality of a laminated notecard really seems to help.

I often get asked which books are best to learn leadership. I usually scribble down a few titles and pass it on.
I've added my bookshelf here, in hopes it will help you on your journey to becoming a better leader.

These have helped me grow by leaps and bounds.

I went from contributor to manager to manager of managers to director of departments with them as my constant guide.

Management Theory

Learning the ins and outs of what it takes to be a manager can take some time to get used to. Especially if you’re coming from IC work. They’re fundamentally different jobs. What worked for you as an IC won’t work for you as a manager.

Communication

Communication is the heart of leadership. It’s been the hardest thing for me to learn how to do well over the years. Every situation and person are different. Showing up authentically for each is hard. Each person and interaction requires a tailored approach, emotional intelligence, and candor.

Senior Leadership

Skills for managing a small team won't work for overseeing managers and directors. It's about empowering the teams you lead to operate more autonomously. It's about collaborating laterally and upwards more with others for the organization's success.

Getting things done at a high quality bar is another key component of leadership. Helping your player, user, customer should be at the heart of everything you do.
